Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) 101:  Alcohol Use Disorder

In this lecture, we will review the epidemiology of alcohol use in the US, chronic health problems related to alcohol use, and FDA-approved medications for alcohol dependency (Disulfiram, Oral naltrexone, injectable sustained release naltrexone, and Acamprosate).  We will also review off-label medications used in the treatment of alcohol use disorder, including, Topiramate, Baclofen, Gabapentin, and Ondansetron

The Chester County Department of Drug & Alcohol Services, in conjunction with the Chester County Medical Society, is pleased to present a Virtual Lecture Series on Substance Use Disorder.

Substance Use Disorder as a disease continues to cost the global community a staggering amount both financially and in lives lost, but there are treatments available to help patients. Participants of these lectures will learn more about Addiction Medicine and how to screen, diagnose, treat, and/or refer patients with substance use disorder – many of whom have co-occurring medical and psychiatric comorbidities.

Christoper Davis, D.O., Diplomate ABIM, ABAM, ABPM, FASAM

Dr. Davis received his undergraduate degree in Electrical Engineering from Pennsylvania State University and his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from Southeastern College of Osteopathic Medicine. His dual residency in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics was completed at the Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, PA in 1994 and he is board certified in Internal Medicine.

Dr. Davis has developed and taught both an undergraduate and graduate-level course on addiction and addiction counseling at Millersville University. Having started his practice in primary care, Dr. Davis branched out into treatment of substance use disorder. He has worked both as a clinician and as a Medical Director in a variety of settings, including inpatient detoxification programs, residential, methadone, and outpatient suboxone clinics. Currently working in his private substance use disorder treatment practice, he is a Diplomate of the following:

William Stauffer, LSW, CCS, CADC

William Stauffer has been the Executive Director of Pennsylvania Recovery Organization Alliance (PRO-A), the statewide recovery organization of Pennsylvania, since 2012. As someone who has been in long-term recovery since age 21, he has been actively engaged in public policy in the recovery arena for most of those years. Mr. Stauffer is a graduate of Northampton Community College, Cedar Crest College, and Kutztown University. He is also an adjunct professor of Social Work at Misericordia University in Dallas Pennsylvania.

Mr. Stauffer has over 25 years of clinical and administrative experience in both inpatient and outpatient settings. He served as the Program Director of the Halfway Home of the Lehigh Valley from 1999 to 2012 and was the President of the Pennsylvania Halfway House Association from 2002-2007. He has been a staunch advocate for strong SUD Patient Privacy Protections at both the state and federal levels for many years, running a recovery house taskforce for Pennsylvania that helped inform PA Act 59 of 2017 and testifying in front of the US Senate Special Committee on Aging on the opioid epidemic and older adults in 2018. In 2019, Mr. Stauffer conducted a hearing with the PA House Human Services Committee to expand recovery opportunities for young people and that same year received the Vernon Johnson Award Individual Recovery Advocate of the Year award.

William Stauffer has initiated numerous workforce expansion initiatives for persons in recovery. A major focus of his work has been aimed at moving our entire SUD care system towards a five-year care paradigm to dramatically expand the numbers of Americans in Recovery while saving lives, resources, and communities.
